Instead of distributing food or cash on people in need, Mercy Hands and World Food Programme - Iraq adopted the approach of employing the breadwinners of needy families in short-term jobs aimed at beautifying the city of Basra and rehabilitating its public facilities.
The workers receive wages for their work, in addition to on the job training on skills that may help them get into the jobs market after the end of the project.
At the beginning and end of each working day, workers receive awareness lectures in different areas of life that contribute to building their capacity as individuals and benefiting the community at large.
